Arsenic in baby formula? Our Q&A on facts and fiction

Q & A REGARDING ARSENIC IN INFANT/TODDLER FORMULA AND ORGANIC BROWN RICE SYRUP     In light of the recent reports of arsenic levels found in organic baby & toddler formulas, we would like to reassure our customers and staff that we are taking the utmost care to stock safe, healthful products. This is an issue that actually involves many levels of concern because it focuses on elements present in our environment – in water, the air we breathe, in everything that grows from our soil. We are currently working to understand more about this Dartmouth study that documented arsenic levels in certain products, as covered in the news, but we also need to remember that this is part of a big picture, involving past agricultural practices whose long term...

We Support Companies that are Working to Become Non-GMO Certified

What are GMOs? GMOs are Genetically Modified Organisms. According to the Non-GMO Project’s website, “GMOs are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.   Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence...

The Case of the Missing Pastry Case

There is a whole industry of consultants and scientists whose job is to get you to buy and pay more.  In the grocery business, these are people responsible for wafting throughout the store the smell of roasting chicken and freshly baked bread, and placing boxes of hot donuts near the front door.  The science of "priming" uses visual cues, tastes, smells, suggestion, lighting, timing, and location to make our bellies feel more empty and prompt the impulse of our primate brain to fill them with immediately satisfying high calorie, high fat foods.     All of which leads us to the case of the missing pastry case.  As you know, you won't find a bread bakery or pastry shop inside a Natural Grocers store.  In fact, you don't find many super-sweet...

Accepting the challenges of sourcing local and organic produce in Winter

We are starting to get in that time of year where fruit and produce growers are starting to transition their crops from the northern growing regions to the southern and warmer growing regions.  The growers are saying that this transition period should last until mid-November, so expect to have shortages and occasional quality issues during this time.  Our vendors will continue to try to source the best product they can, but sometimes it just isn’t there.      Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage is proud to support local growers in our communities and certified organic growers everywhere.  In practice, this means many familiar items get scarce or expensive during Winter.  We will never compromise on our promise to sell only 100% USDA certified...

Review: Seal Sama Teriyaki Sauce

The other night, I polished off my sample bottle of Seal Sama teriyaki sauce, and it reminded me all over again how much people like this particular brand. It has just the right blend of flavors that seems to make any quickie concoction I throw together into a delicious meal (and that's the true value of a bottle of cooking sauce!). I had to cook up a bunch of veggies from the farmers market (onions, peppers, zuchini & yellow squash), so I just slowly sauteed them, adding in a baggie of precooked rice that I had in the freezer, and then poured the last of the teriyaki sauce into it at the end.

Ian's frozen Wafflewich

How interesting...we just got samples of a product that was probably designed with kids in mind, but I've gotten unsolicited comments from the adults here at work that it really hits the spot when you're starving and need a quick meal. The product is Ian's frozen Wafflewich, a frozen breakfast convenience food which is wheat-free and gluten-free. We only got to try the Egg & Maple Cheddar one so far, but it has egg/cheese in between two gluten-free toaster waffles. You can microwave it (which is what we did) or bake in oven. My boss had commented, after looking at the box, that it was probably the type of thing her young daughter would love. I had to talk folks into trying a little piece of it at first, because they thought it was a bit odd of an idea, but then everyone...
