Bran is present in and may be milled from any cereal grain, including rice, corn, wheat, oats, barley and millet. Also known as miller's bran, it is the hard outer layer of cereals which remains after the surrounding chaff is removed. Along with germ, bran is an integral part of whole grains. Bran is rich in dietary fiber and essential fatty acids (EFAs). Bran contains significant quantities of starch, protein, vitamins, dietary minerals, which is why its presence in whole grains is so important.
