Chronic pain affects 100 million Americans at a cost of $635 million annually. Traditional medical management includes the use of prescription medication, often including opioids. Recent research has shown that dysfunction in the population of gut bacteria, termed dysbiosis, has been implicated in chronic pain and central sensitization in what is referred to as the gut-brain axis.
