Week of 9/14: Ten Reasons Why Organic is Good for the Economy

 

  1. A 9.6-fold increase in net income—the financial advantage realized by a farm after eight years of transition to organic! Good for the farmer = good for the economy.
  2. "Ecosystem services," which include climate regulation, water quality, and erosion control, are currently being lost at a price tag of $4.3-20.2 trillion/year, due to land-use change. Converting to organic has significant potential to boost the value of ecosystem services, but only 1% of global farmland is organic.
  3. $40 billion annually in the U.S.—it's the estimated cost of lost topsoil because of dependence on mono-cropping and chemical fertilizers. Organic farming builds topsoil with cover crops, crop rotation, compost, and more.
  4. Organic methods don't cost taxpayers an estimated $157 billion per year to clean up fertilizer pollution, including $1.7 billion to remove nitrates from the public water supply!
  5. What's better for pollinators is better for the economy—nearly $200 billion (in 2005) was the estimated worth of global crops pollinated by honeybees. Colony collapse disorder has increased the cost of pollinator services for U.S. farmers by 20%!  
  6. Industrialized farming is bad for local economies—in a review of studies on communities where industrialized agriculture dominates, 57% experienced detrimental impacts, especially to socio-economic conditions.
  7. Smaller farms circulate more money through local economies. The average size of an organic farm in the U.S. is 285 acres, compared to the overall average farm size of 418 acres. (per 2008 and 2012 census data respectively).
  8. Organic Hotspots—counties with a high level of organic agriculture that also have neighboring counties with high organic activity are a boon to the local economy! 225 U.S. counties have been identified as hotspots.
  9. On average, the poverty rate goes down by 1.35 percentage points in counties with organic hot spots.
  10. $2,000—that's how much the median household income rises in counties with organic hot spots.

  1. Eating organic food could boost your antioxidant intake by up to 40%! That's like eating two more portions of fruits and veg a day.
  2. 120% more antioxidant activity—that’s how organic spinach compares to conventional!
  3. Organic strawberries have a longer shelf life, higher antioxidant activity, and more Vitamin C, studies show.
  4. Organic meat, and dairy have a better Omega 3: Omega 6 fatty acid balance.
  5. Grass-fed and organic meat and milk also have more of this good4u fatty acid—CLA (conjugated linoleic acid)!
  6. No GMOs, no human sewage sludge, no irradiation—Certified Organic standards say a big NO thank you to those!
  7. 48% less cadmium, a toxic metal, was found in organic produce than in conventional, according to multiple studies.  
  8. Pesticide residue is 400% lower, on average, in organic produce than conventional, studies show.
  9. 94% of Americans have pesticide breakdown products in their urine.
  10. One week of eating an organic diet (at least 80%) reduced organophosphate pesticide metabolites in participants' urine by 96%!
