Letter From the Iselys - August 2026

Hi Neighbors,

It’s Natural Grocers’ 71st (!!) anniversary this month, and seven-plus decades of doing this has us feeling reflective. The world has changed so much since 1955, when our story started. That was the first year more Americans traveled by plane than by train— can you imagine? Now, in this era of driverless cars, artificial intelligence, and the availability of almost anything at the click of a button, the pace of change can be disorienting.

We believe in the enduring power of regenerative organic agriculture to keep the soil from turning to dust. It's how we nurture birdsong in the morning, an abundance of bees and butterflies, and the vibrant hues of wildflowers in the summer. It's the path to a more resilient food system. The proof is in the soil.

We believe in the healing power of real food, prepared with nourishing ingredients and backed by the science of nutrition education. We value food free of additives and artificial ingredients, which only has the purpose to serve the manufacturer—not the eater. That’s a standard worth holding onto.

We believe in the abiding power of roots to weather the turbulence of changing times. Ours are deeply planted in our Five Founding Principles. Our commitment to Nutrition Education, Quality, Always Affordable Pricing, Community, and Crew has guided us from the beginning, and still shapes our business practices to this day.

We believe in the purpose-giving power of community and family. It’s these beautifully imperfect and oh-so-human connections that give our lives and our life-work true meaning. And this is what Margaret Isely, our co-founder, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend, taught us to value above all else. The memory of her bright smile and fearless, generous spirit lives on in everything we do, and no artificial intelligence or instant gratification can replace a legacy like that.

At the end of a hot summer day—be it in 1955 or 2026—we know what we believe in. And that’s worth holding onto, no matter how the world is changing. Happy August, neighbors. We look forward to seeing you soon!
