Letter From the Iselys - June 2023

Dear Friends,

Did you know you can trace the journey of a raindrop from wherever it fell in the world all the way to the ocean? An incredible interactive map called River Runner lets you do it, and it’s created with actual watershed data. But what sticks in our minds is how a single droplet of water—something so seemingly insignificant we don’t even think about it— travels miles and miles and miles.

Raindrop with the sky in the reflectionIt makes us contemplate our everyday grocery choices. Because what we pack in our kids’ lunchboxes, fill our menus with, and rely on for daily hygiene has upstream and downstream impacts. Yet, in a world so full of noise, with issues looming large and seemingly beyond our control, it’s hard to know how to say “yes, we can do better!” But we must. We’re not advocating for perfection or unfounded idealism, but how many raindrops are contaminated by an excessive burden of toxic pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals from industrialized agriculture and manufacturing?

Not only can we choose groceries produced with greater transparency, better-for-the-planet practices, and a more sustainable life cycle from beginning to end use—we can make our summer menus regenerative. We can choose food produced with methods that not only take less from the planet but also help heal it. The proof is in the soil—in thriving soil ecosystems that grow healthier food, in carbon drawn down from the atmosphere and stored in the earth.

And it’s in healthier families and communities too. So, our Natural Grocers family wants to be mindful that our daily, sometimes forgotten choices have an impact—one that travels miles and miles like a single raindrop finding its way to the ocean. Will you join us this June in being mindful of your raindrops too?

P.S. Shoutout to all the dads this month!

Thanks, Pop, for teaching us early about the impact of our choices.
