Women's History Month

And One Woman's Vision for a Healthier World

Fearless. Determined. Nurturing. March is Women’s History Month and when history-making women are the subject the first person who comes to mind is Margaret Isely. She’s our mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and co-founder, and without her, there would be no story to tell of Natural Grocers. Margaret loved to learn, and when she was dealing with health problems at a relatively young age, she decided to take matters into her own hands. She did her research. She opened her mind to new ideas. She discovered proper nutrition and its importance to good health. She changed her lifestyle, starting with the food on her plate and adding supplements to her diet, and she felt better. Then she set about making history, of course.

Women’s History Month honors the resolve, courage, and kindness of countless women—women who are fearless, determined and nurturing—women who have changed the world. We have gratitude for every one of them, and especially for Margaret, who forged a path of impact, who taught us what to value, and how to love.

Woven throughout our Five Founding Principles is Margaret’s legacy, beginning with her passion for nutrition education. She experienced firsthand the empowerment of knowledge, and she believed that everyone should have access to it. When we open new stores, we include education centers because we want to provide places where everyone can come and learn to take charge of their health and the health of their loved ones. Because of the thirst, Margaret instilled in us for knowledge, and of sharing that knowledge with friends and neighbors, we have Nutritional Health Coaches on staff to share their nutrition expertise with you. Margaret embraced her community, and she lived for working together to leave this planet better than she found it. That’s the passion that drives us still, and we relish the occasions that invite us to remember how it all began.

We can’t close this letter without recalling one of the sweetest life lessons Margaret passed on to us, and it’s as simple as this—when in doubt, eat chocolate! We happen to have a special chocolate sale going on March 30th, so don’t forget to check it out, but also— don’t wait until then to indulge! Finally, here’s to all the women who have shaped history, and to all the women whose daily acts of courage, determination and kindness enrich our lives.
