Letter From the Iselys - February 2024

Ode to Leap Day

"Today is always here,’ said Sethe. ‘Tomorrow, never"

–Toni Morrison, Beloved

February, this year you’re a little different than usual—a whole extra day different! And we wonder, what kind of enchantment can we imagine with the gift of 24 more hours? If we treated it as a rare and special occasion, how would we spend it?

Illustration of person sitting and reading in a calendar that reads "February 29"Would we take the time to start the day slowly… to sit still, breathe deep, and bask in some winter sunshine, or curl up by the window and watch the snowflakes fall? Might we delay our dive into social media, the news, and email, choosing instead to let this day’s momentum build on the small offline moments that bring joy and inspiration?

Is this the day we’d finally call a friend we want to reconnect with or a family member we’ve been missing? Would we sign up for that dance class? Or go on a spontaneous adventure with our camera? Perhaps dust off Grandpa’s model train collection and get busy reviving it? We know the things we’ve been dreaming of but never do. Is this the moment we unlock the “when I’m less busy” list with the truth that our only time is now?

As the early wintry dusk gathers, will we stop and watch its pink glow spread across the horizon? And when dinnertime beckons, will we find ourselves preparing a delicious meal because eating on-the-go or out of a box doesn’t fit this beautiful gift of a day? When we lay our heads on our pillows, will gratitude wrap itself around us like a cozy blanket as we drift off to dreamland on the gentle breezes of time well spent?

At Natural Grocers, we know we’ll use this extra February day to do what we’re committed to every other day of the year—empowering our neighborhoods with nutrition education and the best quality natural, organic, and regenerative products at Always Affordable® prices. But we hope some whimsical imagining about the gift of one extra day also inspires a little more slowing down, gratitude, and meaning into all our days. May the same be true for you, our neighbors, and our Crew.

We wish you good health and warm hearts all February long. May you know you are loved and that you matter, no matter what.

In health,
The Isely Family
