Eat a Grain-Free Breakfast Every Day

Rapper Beth sings and rhymes through the reasons why it's important to eat a grain-free breakfast. You can read more about it below the video and join the 30 day Grain-Free Breakfast Challenge!

Sing along!

Cut the grains, they just cause pain.

Take the challenge; breakfast balance.

Break the chains; defog your brain.

Your breakfast will never be lame.

The typical Standard American Diet (SAD) Breakfast is a bowl of cereal with skim milk, a glass of orange juice and a cup of light yogurt. We've been lead to believe that this low-fat meal is healthy. However, instead of healthy fats, fresh veggies and fruit, this typical breakfast is loaded with sugar — 9 teaspoons worth!

Replacing that with a grain-free, high-protein breakfast such as 2 eggs scrambled in butter with red bell peppers, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, and turkey bacon plus 1 whole pear, we get 4.5 teaspoons of sugar but over twice the amount of protein, plus healthy fats, antioxidants and fiber from the vegetables and fruit!

Wondering what's wrong with grains? Grains contain compounds called phytates — enzyme inhibitors that bind minerals and prevent their absorption. They also contain a sequence of proteins called prolamines that are not easily digested by humans (unless fermented) and they tend to spike blood sugar. All of this leads to:

  • Inflammation
  • Immune System Activation
  • Mood and Behavior Disruption
  • Elevated Blood Sugar Levels
  • Gut Inflammation, Dysfunction and Damage
  • Reduced Nutrient Absorption
  • Allergies

Take the challenge and eat a grain-free breakfast every day for 30 days, then see how you feel. Here is the challenge information, along with recipes and tips. Join the conversation about grain-free breakfasts on Facebook, August 1-31, 2013!
