Mason Jar Hot Cocoa

Give the gift of cozy this holiday season with our Mason Jar Hot Cocoa. Perfect for teachers, coworkers, friends, and family, this homemade treat is quick to make and brimming with festive charm. Pair it with a plate of cookies or other baked goodies for a present that’s sure to warm hearts (and hands!).

Makes: 2 (16-ounce) Mason jars, 5 servings per jar
1⁄2 cup Natural Grocers® Brand Bulk Sucanat Sweetener or Organic Coconut Sugar
1 cup Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Organic Cocoa Powder
1 cup organic dry milk powder or plant-based coconut milk powder
1⁄2 cup Natural Grocers Brand Bulk Organic Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
1 cup mini vegan marshmallows
Note: A sugar alternative may be used in place of sugar, follow package instructions for equivalent amount.
  1. Make sure your Mason jars are clean and dry.
  2. Add ¼ cup sweetener to each Mason jar. Gently tap the jar to level the sweetener.
  3. Add ½ cup cocoa powder to each jar. Gently tap the jar to level the cocoa powder.
  4. Add ½ cup dry milk powder to each jar and gently tap to level it. Note: When using coconut milk powder, break up any lumps, making sure it is smooth before adding it to the jars.  
  5. Add ¼ cup chocolate chips to each Mason jar and level.
  6. Add ½ cup or fill the remaining space in each Mason jar with mini marshmallows.
  7. Seal with a lid, tie with a ribbon, and create a decorative label with the following instructions. Label instructions: Transfer the contents of the jar to a bowl and mix to combine. Add ¼-cup into a serving mug and stir in six-ounces of steaming hot water or milk. Mix well and serve immediately.
